COMING SOON! NEW SEED CROSSES FROM HUNTER'S TORCH DAYLILY GARDEN Seed starting tips - I'll share with you the method that I've used for several years now and I've had great success with it - I found it on an internet site. Mix 1 tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide in 1 gallon of distilled water. Pour an amount of the water solutions into a container that is sufficient to completely cover your seeds and add the seeds - I use old baby food jars but any small containers will work. I then put the containers in a place indoors that is not in direct sunlight and remains cool. If the water starts to become milky or cloudy over days, drain the old solution and add new. You will usually see the white root tips emerge from the seeds in 3-4 days, or it may take longer - be patient. Once they are sprouting I plant the seeds in either prepared daylily beds or in containers with a soil mixture. I make an impression in the soil surface that is the same depth as the seeds height, place the seed and cover with a spoonful of play sand. You do not want to plant the seeds deeply as this often causes "damping off," a condition that occurs when soil is too high on the base of the leaves of the seedlings. Plant too deeply and the seedling will either perish or struggle to survive. One of the benefits to using sand to cover the seed is that it provides added drainage around the seedlings leaf base and helps to lessen the likelihood of damping off. Once planted in starter trays, I place my seedlings in areas that get filtered sunlight for about the first two weeks of their growth and then gradually move them to sunnier spots. Other daylily growers will plant directly in prepared beds, but I would leave it to your own personal preference. Check your seedlings daily to make sure they have adequate moisture for continued growth. 1. BEFORE
